How does Wing Chun compare to other Martial Arts?

Martial Arts can be broadly categorised using just a few classifications. What follows is a greatly simplified explanation of a vast subject area.

Internal or External
Internal styles rely on their use of the body’s internal energy or ‘chi’ to generate power
External styles rely on the use of body structure and musculature to generate power

Hard or Soft
Hard styles strike using muscle tension to achieve great impact
Soft styles strike with as little muscle tension as possible to achieve a whipping action

Short Range or Long Range
Short Range styles specialise in hand techniques and ‘sticking’ to an opponent
Long Range styles employ kicks and sweeping arms to reach from a greater distance

Wing Chun is, for the most part, an External, Hard & Soft, Short Range style.
